European Parliament President David Sassoli, an Italian socialist and former journalist, died in an Italian hospital early Tuesday, according to his spokesman. He was 65 years old.
He has served as Speaker of the 705-seat House since July 2019, and his term in the largely ceremonial job was due to end this month. Maltese MP Roberta Metsola of the conservative European People’s Party (EPP) is likely to succeed him.
“Sassoli represented balance, humanity and charity. All his allies, from every political party and every European country, have always admired him for these traits,” declared Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
Sassoli was diagnosed with Legionella pneumonia in September and had to go back to the hospital in December because of immune system problems. He died at a cancer center in the northern city of Aviano, where he had received a bone marrow transplant ten years earlier.
