Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the Russian military was trying to seize the Chernobyl nuclear plant. The plant was the site of the world’s deadliest nuclear accident, when a nuclear reactor exploded in April 1986, spreading radioactive waste across Europe.
The plant is located 130 kilometers (80 mi) north of the capital of Kiev. The detonated reactor is covered by a protective shelter to prevent radiation leakage and the entire plant is disabled.
Zelensky said on Twitter that “our defenders are giving their lives so that the tragedy of 1986 doesn’t recur. This is a declaration of war against the whole of Europe,” he said.
