Ukraine Parliament approves state of emergency

Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, approved the declaration of a state of emergency across the country except the Donetsk and Luhansk regions on Wednesday amid a growing situation at the country’s borders.

Earlier in the day, NSDC (National Security and Defense Council) Secretary Oleksiy Danilov said that he had decided to declare a state of emergency for the entire country except the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.

“The issue of declaring a state of emergency was discussed … the decision was made. According to our law, the Verkhovna Rada must approve this decision within 48 minutes … A state of emergency will be introduced throughout Ukraine , except that the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, ”Danilov told reporters.

The measures would be tightened or softened depending on the situation in different parts of the country, he said, adding that the emergency was planned to be declared for 30 days and could be extended up to 60 days.

The NSDC chief had said that the authorities have no plans to seize the registered weapons from the population once the state of emergency is declared.
