Rytasha Rathore: Easier to empathise when it’s a lived experience

So, she felt it was a case of life imitating art when director Sonam Nair told her that her character Jiya Masaba would go through mental health problems in the second season of Masaba. Through Jia’s journey, the Netflix series sheds light on depression and the need to recognize and address it. Rathore says his own complex emotional history made it easy to portray the role sensitively. “I have been an emotionally unstable person for most of my life, and have struggled with my mental and emotional well-being. When it is a lived experience, it is easier to view it through a lens of empathy and sensitivity. . I’m glad we explored these topics. It adds to the larger conversation around mental health,” she says.

His honest performance has earned him Best Supporting Actor: Series nominations at the upcoming Mid-Day and Radio City Hitlist OTT Awards. The actor is happy that Masaba Masaba has established her range as an artiste. “It confirms to others what I have known since graduating from drama school – that I am very good at my job,” she smiles, adding that playing the candid and warm Gia was easy for her. Because they shared many similarities. “It was two to three years since we shot the first season, and I had grown up a bit since then. So, this helped add more layers to Jiah’s inner world. The only difficult thing with such roles is to draw a line between me and the character. Sonam helped me hit the right notes.”
