A gunman shot and killed several people at a Walmart store in the US state of Virginia late Tuesday, police and city officials said, adding that the shooter has also died.
“We were able to find multiple fatalities and multiple injured parties,” Chesapeake Police Department Officer Leo Kosinski told reporters at the scene, adding that rapid-responding officers entered the store “immediately.”
“We believe this is a lone shooter and that is the lone shooter killed at this point in time,” he said.

The city of Chesapeake also said on Twitter that police “confirmed an active shooter incident with fatalities at Walmart on Sam Circle.
It added, “Our first responders are well trained and ready to respond, please give them space to do so.”
News footage showed a major police presence at the scene, with Kosinski saying that several officers and investigators were searching through the store and securing the area.
The exact death toll is unclear, but CBS affiliate WUSA said police said they believed no more than 10 people were killed.
Virginia State Senator Lewis Lucas, who represents the area, said he was “absolutely heartbroken that America’s latest mass shooting occurred tonight at a Walmart in my district in Chesapeake, Virginia.”
“I will not rest until we find a solution to end this epidemic of gun violence in our country that has taken so many lives,” she said on Twitter.
