Eric Steven Weddell was born on January 4, 1985, in Fontana, California. By profession, he is an American football-free safety for the Los Angeles Rams of the National Football League (NFL). He completed his education at Alta Loma High School and also wrote football, basketball, and baseball. He played college football at the University of Utah, where he was an All-American.
He has been named to the Pro Bowl six times and has been awarded as an All-Pro five times. He earned honorable mentions of the Freshman All-American First-Team and All-Mountain West Conference. He posted 60 tackles (29 singles) with four sacks, four forceful fumbles, and one fumble recovery.

He earned Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year, First-team All-MWC, Second-team All-American and Emerald Bowl Defensive MVP honors in 2005. On 6 February 2020, he announced his retirement from the NFL after 13 seasons. On January 12, 2022, after announcing that Los Angeles Rams safety Jordan Fuller would be knocked out of the 2021 playoffs, Waddell came out of retirement and signed with the Rams’ practice squad.
During the 2007 combine, he ran a time of 1.43 10 yards, tying him with Andrea Ellison and Marcus McCauley for the fastest split time ever recorded in an NFL combine. Waddell was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the second round (37th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft.
